Paul uses what seems to be an obvious illustration to get a very important point across. The logic basically goes like this: would it make sense that sense God's grace extends and extends even as our sinful lifestyle extends and extends, then we should keep sinning more and more to get more and more grace. Paul uses very strong language to say no. When we accept the grace of God we die to sin and live in Christ. Too often I really want to live for Christ without dying to sin. If Jesus did not die on the cross, the resurrection would not have been necessary. In the same way if we want to live the abundant life we have to kill our sin at the cross of Christ. Scripture says we have to do this initially, when we come to Christ, and daily as we take up our cross.
