Romans 13 (click here)

Romans 13

Submission is not a very popular topic, nor it is easy for us hard headed stubborn people to do. But, Scripture speaks of it often. The main point to remember that the first step of our saving relationship with God is accepting Him as Savior and Lord. The "Lord" aspect of that automatically demands submission. So our firs priority is to be under the authority of God. In that submission other submissive relationships follow. In this chapter Paul is speaking to Roman Christians who live under the constant threat of persecution. So this is a difficult teaching for them. Here's some questions to consider about how this verse you be understood and lived out:
  • Did America's founding fathers violate this verse in rebelling against King George in England and starting the Revolution?
  • Did those who spoke (white and black) in favor of getting rid of American slavery violate this verse?
  • What about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?
  • In general is it ever right (Godly) for Christians to oppose their government?

The last half of the chapter looks back to yesterday's passage, and gets even more specific. As people we will wear one of two sets of "clothes." Either the clothes of Christ colored in love or the clothes of sin colored in selfishness.

This is my prayer today, "14Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.[c]"

Go live

One question of mine that came up is what about times when your government is flawed or doing the wrong things? Because if you know that your government is doing something wrong with the laws isn't it the citizens duty to make that known and plead for change?
Kind of confusing for me...

Oh another thought! If that's allowed. On the submissision portion I think it's also important to take in context of school and work... because ultimately your boss, or teachers or whomever are your authorities as well... even if it seems hard to listen and obey, we still have to.
