Day 1

Well here it is, after the excitement of camp and the anticipation of something new this is where it counts. What are we going to do with God's word and the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives? If you click on the title of this post (day 1) it will take you to an online version of John 1, and you can read it in different versions, which can help with understanding and a fresh perspective.
So some things that stuck out to me (the first one I got from KC, that's how this conversation thing works)
  • v. 4 Jesus is all that is necessary for life and His life is the light necessary to sustain our lives. Do I keep out the light? or do I run to the light of Christ and carry it with me everywhere I go?
  • v. 12-13 We are children of God if we choose to trust in and live like Jesus. We are not just associated with Christ, or mere believers but we can be in the family, a really good family.
  • v.14 The Message, which is a helpful tool in understanding Scripture, says that Jesus "moved into the neighborhood" when He came to earth. Not only did He come to the world but He made himself available to EVERYONE and if we truly carry His light, we will carry it to EVERYONE.
  • v. 35-43 Two times in this section we have the phrase come and see, once by Jesus and once by Phillip to his brother Nathaniel. Jesus is wanting you and I to fully experience a relationship with Him to get to know Him and then to make Him known. If Jesus is truly what life is all about, then He is worth telling our friends about, even if we think they don't want to hear it.
  • v. 42 Jesus changes Peter name to fit Peter for a healthy relationship with Him. Either by others, or by ourselves we give ourselves lots of names. "Hypocrite", "Faker", "Loser", "Jock", "Nerd", "Geek", and the list goes on. Not all of those are intended to be insults, but the name that really matters is the name that Jesus gives. Throughout the Bible those who belong to Christ are called sons, daughter, overcomers, conquerors, a royal priesthood, saved, redeemed. You may not know what all those mean but trust me they are incredible and much better than the names we often take on.

Not everyday will be this long, but let's think together about what the Word is saying and what we need to be in response to the Spirit. Please post your comments or questions, if you want to keep it private you can email Justin at youth.faith@sbcglobal.com

I think verse 14 says a lot. To me I see it as saying something even more powerful than just the fact that Jesus was the result of the Word turned to flesh. I believe that the Word was turned to flesh and that same flesh also became part of the flesh of everyone. That truly we are part flesh of God, which is a parallel to Genesis and the idea of humans being of the image of God. It seems to be a New Testament reminder of the fact that God will always be within us and be a part of us that will never leave. This whole thought process I have kinda makes me think of it as a early hinting towards the Holy Spirit being within us.

John's Gospel leaves nothing to doubt, it clearly spells out Jesus' divinity, even His role in creation. The fact that He is the Word and that He existed BEFORE the world, but also that he was indeed flesh and in this flesh he existed as the LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Isn't is said that the world doesn't know that? That He was rejected by His chosen people...and they knew Him not... Did you know that Jesus was most often referred to as The Son of Man and this is how he most often related Himself to the world. It seems this was His favorite self expression. Was he happy to be human, to have divested Himself of his divinity to become fully human and yet He was still fully God. I think perhaps it gave Him great joy to be able to walk among His great love as one of us and that is why He chose "Son of Man" as His favorite title. I think that says a lot about the God who sacraficed so much for us...
